I spent most of my day today attending a class on hair textures. How to handle the kinds of hair that curl and coil and kink up. It was very eye-opening for me. As a hairdresser, I felt like the world of extremely textured hair was out of my grasp. And today, I learned that it is not nearly as intimidating as I thought. I am going to be working on developing my skill set to be able to service all hair types. I have felt relatively comfortable in handling hair that was curly, say to a 3B type texture, but anything tighter curled or even coily I didn't feel that I had enough knowledge to deal with. Now I feel like I have a better understanding of how those types of hair need to be treated. I even learned some new techniques to be able to try out.
This was a great class to attend. It showed me two things: the first being that there is always something new I can learn, the second being that I can learn new things and don't have to resign myself to saying to potential clients, "I'm sorry, I don't know how to do your hair". Now I have methods for coloring and methods for styling. How wonderful to be able to work through the nervousness of doing something for the first time, knowing how much it will assist in my career. I am just happy to be able to keep learning. And with Matrix, they are on the absolute cutting edge of inclusivity and innovation. I am proud to call myself a member of the Matrix family.
