I had an interesting thought. What am I worth as a stylist? How do I judge that? How do you judge that? Today I would like to explore this topic. It isn't the usual fare here, but it is something that does affect what I do on the daily.
I have always had a rather tenous relationship to getting paid for what I do. I am very well aware that the services I provide are a luxury. No one has to get their hair done. At least not for health reasons. Nobody needs a haircut, certainly not color and definitely not styling. So how do I justify charging for services that no one needs? This is a real question that I deal with almost daily.
I feel very fortunate to do such a fun job. I get to play with hair every day. I can practice science and art all while helping other people feel pretty and confident in their style. My career will not soon be replaced by any form of AI or robotics. I currently don't have a boss, besides myself, to answer to. I am quite happy to have the lifestyle I do. What is that old phrase? "If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life." I think this is true to a certain extent. I don't feel very often that I am working, it really is more like playing.
Then I have the other side of the coin of charging what I am worth, which I don't really know. I know that I have over 20 years of professional experience under my belt. I know that I continue to learn new techniques and trends to stay caught up with what's current. I know that I am also an educator for an international brand, Matrix. I even get to teach in Spanish. I am even trying my hand at social media presence. So how does that translate into what I charge for my services? That is ever the question.
I will continue to look for the answers. And continue to be grateful that I get to do something so cool as to be able to alter people's looks to suit themselves. Onward to further adventures.
Don't hesitate to share with me, if you have any ideas about this topic.
